We've pulled together some of our favourite tips from friends of ours on how they maintain their mental fitness and why it's so important to them. Enjoy!
"The last four or five years have shown me how vitally important it is to be aware of my mental health. It truly is number one priority. I remind myself of this using the phrase 'you cant pour from an empty cup'. Meditation is my biggest anchor with mental health. I try to practise little and often. Sticking to regular meditation as a discipline is still a work in progress!" - Tom Mitchell, England Rugby Sevens Captain
"I treat my mental health and that of others with the utmost priority. The best way I manage is by talking, I wholeheartedly support talking as therapy. Bottling matters of the mind only worsens things and being able to vent, cry and have a listening ear is very soothing." - Lape Banjo, Sky News Reporter
"More than ever it’s important to actively take time out to focus on our mental wellbeing. It’s important to know your triggers and find ways of best coping with it. For me, when I’m down, overwhelmed with work or feeling a bit grey – I go on a run. Even if I have to really force myself to, I know it gives me the headspace I need. I often find this helps while working on hard hitting documentaries – it can take its toll. I go to bed thinking about it and have learnt that I can’t work on back to back crime docs for example. Like anything though it’s important to know your
limits and to check in with yourself regularly." - Olivia Strong, Founder of Run For Heroes
"Staying active and taking time out for myself. That might be going for a run or doing a yoga class. Also trying to get good sleep. At night I try and listen to some chilled music or an audio book. Turn that computer screen or TV off!" - Tyler Williams-Green, Founder of Outrunners Charity
"Mental Health used to be a really scary thing for me. However the more I read and acknowledge it, the more I feel empowered to conquer things and change my mindset. I definitely try to focus my energy into work or passions outside my day to day so I don’t get lost in my head. It’s also handy to focus on Anxious As Anything as whatever I’m going through, I try to portray that into the work that shows on the platform." - Denise Chippendale, Founder of Anxious As Anything
"Two simples rules I live by are to keep my energy high and avoid burnout. Feed your mind with good stuff. From what you read, watch, listen to, who you spend time with. I stopped reading the news years ago. Exercise regularly! I love mixing things up from going to the gym, hot yoga, cycling, hiking in nature. I’ve recently found my burst of happiness during the day cycling around Regent’s Park over lunch… blissful!" - Kaew Suppumas, Founder of Leafage
"I believe that every single person has dips in their emotional well being and I feel it is our responsibility as members of our respective communities to check in on each other from time to time. As well as doing this, creating social events such as meeting up to train, eat or do a fun and engaging activity will help an individual deal with their emotions." - Andre Coggins, Founder of Mafia Moves and run coach
